Guided tours and workshops

School classes are offered an insight into the life and work of Charlemagne, the first emperor of the Middle Ages. The focus is on his seminal reforms in the fields of education, writing, coinage and monastic life as well as on the empire he built, in other words, the foundations of European society and culture.
Offers for school groups from Switzerland are free-of-charge.

Guided tours

Primary level

‘Charlemagne. The most powerful emperor of the Middle Ages‘
Charlemagne was the first emperor of the Middle Ages and ruled over a large kingdom. The script he introduced forms the basis for our printed fonts today. Elaborate scripts, a model of an abbey and Carolingian weapons invite children to learn more about this ruler who continues to fascinate us today. 4th – 6th school year| Duration 1 h

Secondary level I

‘Charlemagne. Power, reforms, cult‘
School children gain an insight into the life and work of Charlemagne, the first emperor of the Middle Ages. His personality and forward-thinking reforms in education, scripts, coinage and abbey life form the focal point in addition to his kingdom. There are many legends surrounding Charlemagne and we discuss the cult and myth of this important emperor. Tour from class 7 | Duration 1 h

Secondary level II

‘Charlemagne. The father of Europe‘
School children gain an insight into the life and work of Charlemagne, the first emperor of the Middle Ages. His personality, his forward-thinking reforms in education, scripts, coinage and abbey life and his attempts to retain and secure power form the focal point and are presented as the basis for Europe and our culture. The cult and myth surrounding this father of Europe are addressed and discussed. Tour from class 9 | Duration 1 h

Workshop

‘Quill, ink and parchment’

Writing with artistic letters and striking initials is an art form. We look at some exquisite scripts from the early Middle Ages and submerse ourselves in the era of Charlemagne. The children then have a chance to practise writing in the Carolingian script and write their own texts and design their own artistic initials using a quill and pigments. Material cost per class CHF 50. All classes | Duration 90 mins
